Homes have been flying off the market which means there are plenty of people out there that are going to be moving very soon! The process of moving can be exhausting and messy which is why packing and unloading the right way can help ease the stress that can come with moving. Take a few of our tips into consideration that can help prepare you for the first few nights in your new home so you won’t be tearing through boxes trying to find what you’re looking for.
For the family - set aside dedicated boxes prepared with all the bedding that will be needed, pillows, toothbrushes, towels, a shower liner, toilet paper, pajamas, and clothes. Then think about the cleaning supplies you will want to use and make sure that is in a prepared box as well - disinfectant wipes, dish soap, etc. Then, think about what your first meal may be…perhaps ordering pizza? Bringing cups, paper plates, napkins, trash bags, and some snacks to have on hand while unpacking will help you get through the first couple of days while the rest is still packed away.
For the kids - moving with children can be a little rough and confusing for them. Make it a smooth transition for them by having them pack their own “new home suitcase” with things you know they will want right away. From their must-have favorite toys, a current book, stuffed animal or night light, having their essentials accessible to them right away will ease the burden of the move on them. Of course, if you are moving with babies, fully load the diaper bag with supplies to last your through the first day and night and a ready-to-go Pack n’ Play.
For the pets - important members of the family must not be forgotten about during the move! Make sure to set aside a breakfast and dinner portion of their food for you to have available in the house right away. For dogs, it may be smart to immediately set up their water bowl area and take them for a private tour of their new yard and home. If you have a cat, set up their litter box right away. The sooner they know the reigns of their new home and have their designated areas, the more at-home and comfortable they can be.
Miscellaneous items - some things you may not think of to have readily available your first night but may need such as flashlights, a hammer, phone chargers, pen and paper, important documents, scissors or any basic cleaning supplies you will want.
By taking the time to set some of these things aside in special boxes or suitcases for your first day in your new home, you can almost guarantee a smoother transition. Things you may ‘want’ can potentially be stored away in boxes for a few days until you get around to unpacking them, so these essentials should help get your through the first initial days and you will ultimately thank yourself later!
