From our towering mountain tops to stunning shrubbery our falling leaves and landscape arguably rival the Eastern US in a variety of ways, which is why we are highly recommending taking a road trip this Autumn! If you are itching for a trip but don't want to leave the state, it's time to pack up and hit the open road. We are going to give you the best guide for a great Alaskan road trip. You can camp out under the stars and look for the Aurora Borealis, stay at a special local attraction, and take in all the fall foliage.
Start your drive in Anchorage and head out to the Valley. Being a local Alaskan and driving these roads frequently we oftentimes forget to slow down and really take in the views. Enjoy the alpine mountainside covered in foliage, berries, and shrubs. Enjoy some of the many picturesque pullouts along the way to Palmer. You can even stop at the Matanuska Glacier Overlook or head up to Hatchers Pass for a hike.
From Palmer, you can head out to Glennallen and spend a day at one of the local lodges. If you want to continue your trip you can drive over to Valdez / Cordova area or take off to Denali. Both offering some pretty amazing views. In Valdez, you can enjoy the Worthington Glacier or Keystone Canyon. If you head up to Denali, it is one of a kind experience you will not regret. Enjoy this 6 million acre park and preserve of Alaska’s wilderness. Make sure you visit the 20,310-ft.-high Denali (Mount McKinley) while you are there!
From there you can continue on to Fairbanks and enjoy the fall foliage on the Tanana River and stay in a local lodge. You can even enjoy an afternoon at Chena hot springs and participate in a variety of activities, including dog sledding or aurora borealis viewing.
We hope that you have a spectacular time on your road trip this fall, we can't wait to hear all about it!
